Philosophy and Approach:
As a mental health professional, I offer individual, couple/dyad, and family counseling sessions. My definition of family includes chosen families. My goal is to create a warm, safe, environment that fosters growth through connection.
I believe that life is the greatest experiment of all. I invite clients to join me as we investigate essential questions. How do we want to relate to ourselves? How do we want to relate to the people that we love? And how might we go about changing our relationships, with ourselves and with others? I employ an eclectic approach with an underpinning of relational-cultural theory and emotionally focused therapy. I also draw from dialectical behavioral techniques, mindfulness-based self compassion, and solutions focused therapy.
I am a person-centered therapist informed by relational-cultural theory. Person-centered means that the counseling session is your time. We follow your agenda, not mine. Relational-cultural theory was created to help explain the developmental processes of people who are not represented in the hyper-individualistic, western models of identity development that focused almost exclusively on the experiences of white, straight, cisgender men. I believe humans heal through connection and mutual empathy. We will focus on establishing a strong therapeutic relationship, exploring your relational patterns and values, and identifying ways that you can exercise both empathy and agency in your relationships.
I take an eclectic approach, using interventions from Emotionally Focused Therapy, Mindful Self-Compassion, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Emotionally Focused Therapy is an evidenced based model that builds security, confidence, and wellbeing through the experience of vulnerability and support in session. Mindful Self-Compassion is an evidence-based approach that helps build resilience and strength by fostering respect and collaboration with yourself. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based approach focused on skills for moving through big emotions and building the life you want to live.
I draw from other therapies as well, and adapting conventional therapies for neurodivergent populations is an area of professional interest. I consider myself a lifelong learner, and I approach every counseling relationship with cultural humility in order to understand each client’s lived experience.
My focus includes gender and gender transition, navigating neurodiversity, family transitions, relationships of all kinds, and sexuality. I am particularly experienced working with queer, trans, and polyamorous individuals, relationships, and families. I welcome clients of all identities.
